International Wildland-Urban Interface Code

2024 and 2021 IWUIC prescriptive vent-protection provisions

Close-up of RidgeArmor mesh protecting a continuous attic ridge ventilation opening

2024 INTERNATIONAL WILDLAND-URBAN INTERFACE CODE

Sections 504.10.2, 505.10.2 and 506.5.2 — Prescriptive Requirements

“Such vents shall be covered with noncombustible corrosion-resistant mesh with openings not to exceed 1/8 inch.”

RidgeArmor’s Type 304 stainless-steel construction and 1/8-inch openings match this prescriptive mesh criterion.

2021 INTERNATIONAL WILDLAND-URBAN INTERFACE CODE

Sections 504.10, 505.10 and 506.5

“Such vents shall be covered with noncombustible corrosion-resistant mesh with openings not to exceed 1/4 inch.”

RidgeArmor’s 1/8-inch openings are more restrictive than the 1/4-inch maximum permitted by the 2021 edition.

ADDITIONAL PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

The IWUIC also limits each individual ventilation opening to 144 square inches. The configuration of a continuous ridge opening should therefore be verified with the authority having jurisdiction.

The applicable edition and any local amendments depend on the state, county or municipality adopting the IWUIC.
